Astro the home robot

Amazon launches Astro, its first home robot powered by its Alexa smart home technology.

When not at home, the company says it can be controlled remotely to check the safety of pets, people or the home.

It can automatically patrol a home and notify the owner if anything unusual is detected.

Amazon says it's more than "Alexa wheeled" and that it's programmed with a range of movements and expressions to give it a personality.

It states that the Astro can be set up with "out of bounds" zones so that it cannot go to certain areas and can be set to "do not disturb". It also includes camera and microphone deactivation buttons.

Amazon said it would ship the robot later this year - but only in the United States. It says its price will rise to $ 1,449.99 after the initial limited run.

Video calling can be played or drawn on a 19-inch projected "screen".
